On October 5th, 2015, the Nobel Assembly awarded Ms. Youyou Tu the Nobel Prize in Medicine for her discoveries in treating malaria. Ms. Tu used traditional Chinese medicine scriptures to find the plant Artemisia annua and, after successfully extracting the active ingredient, was able to prove in testing that the active ingredient was highly effective against the malaria parasite in both animals and humans. In part due to Ms. Tu’s findings, malaria is now on the verge of eradication.
