It has come to the attention of the College that on May 29, 2018, Sherman Shu-Seng Lai, R. TCMP #1897 was charged with six additional counts of assault, three counts of utter threats, one count of sexual assault, one count of assault with a weapon and one count of forcible confinement. This is in addition to the charges laid on October 31, 2017, November 29, 2017, January 12, 2018, February 9, 2018 and April 11, 2018.
On October 31, 2017, Sherman Lai was arrested and charged by the Guelph Police Service for one count of sexual assault against a former patient. On November 29, Sherman Lai was charged with two further counts of sexual assault involving 2 additional persons both being former patients. On January 12, Sherman Lai was charged with 6 additional counts of sexual assault involving 5 additional persons all of whom were former patients. On February 9, Sherman Lai was charged with 4 additional counts of sexual assault as well as one count of assault, 2 counts of assault with a weapon, 2 counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, 2 counts of utter death threats involving 3 additional persons all of whom were former patients. On April 11, 2018, Sherman Lai was charged with 4 more counts of sexual assault involving 4 additional persons all of whom were former patients.
The College is investigating these matters.
Mr. Lai's practice, the Centre of Integrative Natural Medicine had been located on Surrey Street for over 20 years, but moved locations approximately 6 years ago and is currently located at 3 Badenoch Street in Morriston, Ontario. Mr. Lai has signed a voluntary undertaking with the College and is not able to practice TCM or acupuncture.
The Guelph Police continues to inform the public that there is no statute of limitations on crimes of this nature and any persons with information can contact D/Sgt.
